Obama to losers in GM/Chrysler deals: Hey, you’re sacrificing for the next generation, including my children

Posted by danishova on June 1, 2009

Since when is massive unemployment framed as a “sacrifice” for future generations?  Summary of jaw dropping announcement from Freep.com:

President Barack Obama today hailed the government-led bankruptcy and restructuring of General Motors Corp. as “the end of the old GM and the beginning of a new GM,” even as he warned of its cost in taxpayer money and jobs.

Remind me – why are we doing this again?

Combined with the approval of Chrysler to be sold to Fiat, Obama said, the strategy of quick bankruptcies would result in stronger automakers who could compete on a global stage, and lead the world in developing fuel-efficient vehicles.

They will lead the world in making cars that are not in demand, which Barack demands they make.

QuantcastCombined with the approval of Chrysler to be sold to Fiat, Obama said, the strategy of quick bankruptcies would result in stronger automakers who could compete on a global stage, and lead the world in developing fuel-efficient vehicles.

“The GM of the future will be different than the GM of the past,” Obama said in a speech at the White House, flanked by his top economic advisers. “I am absolutely confident that if well managed, a new GM will emerge that can provide a new generation of Americans with the chance to live out their dreams, that can out-compete automakers from around the world.

So, the entire American Dream rests with this deal, not just people who are directly or indirectly dependent on its success for their livelihood or investments?  And what about companies like Honda who employ a lot of Americans in their American plants?  Does Barack want to put them out of business and thus give them an opportunity to “sacrifice” too?

“When that happens, we can truly say that what is good for General Motors, and all who work there, is good for the United States of America,” Obama added.

Wake me up when it happens. It’s good for the U.A.W. that’s for sure. And once again, he focuses on workers,  ignoring investors.

Obama sought to reassure Americans about the government’s role, saying the breathtaking plan – injecting a fresh $30.1 billion in loans to GM in return for a 60% stake and the right to reconfigure its board of directors – was the only way to ensure GM’s survival while protecting federal money.

With the government writing off $19.4 billion in loans, Obama described bankruptcy as a painful but necessary step to get GM debts under control.

“Piling an irresponsibly large debt on the new GM would be repeating the mistakes of the past,” Obama said. “We are acting as reluctant shareholders because that is the only way to succeed. What we are not doing, and what I have no interest in doing, is running GM.”

Riiight. That’s why you’re controlling the Board of Directors.  Raise your hand if you believe these shameless lies.

The money quote:

Obama also addressed workers at plants and dealerships who will lose their jobs as part of the restructuring, warning that “more jobs would be lost," and adding they were “making a sacrifice for the next generation.”

It’s “a sacrifice you may not have chose to make, but a sacrifice you are nevertheless called to make so that your children and all of our children can grow up in an America that still makes things, that still builds cars, that still strives for a better future,” he said.

Gee thanks, Barry. Tons of jobs are being lost, but Sasha and Malia will benefit from their ‘sacrifice’, so it’s totally worth it.

UPDATE:

1. Fabulous.  Who’s in charge of dismantling GM?  A pipsqueak Yale Law student , Brian Deese, who has not yet earned his degree, does not have an MBA, and knows zip about the auto business.   (H/T El Rushbo and Michelle Malkin)

2. Is it correct English to say, “It’s a sacrifice you may not have chose to make…”?  When I read that I figured it was an error on the part of Freep, but that’s what Barack said. Maybe it’s his Kansan/Indonesian/Hawaiian/Kenyan/Chicago background, but in my neck of the woods we say, “have chosen”.

3. Perhaps it’s time to dust off the “Vero Possumus” seal so Barack can initiate a Presidential Sacrifice Medal, honoring the masses for whom jobs have not been created or saved, but who are helping Michelle’s kids.
